These japa malas have 108 beads with beautiful embellishments. However, the size may vary from 7 to 8mm - this consequently affects the length of each mala, which is roughly 100cm. Embellishments do also vary as per availability. Finally, there are colour variations with each individual mala. Importantly, all natural gemstones have variations created by forces of nature. An amethyst mala tends to have these in abundance. However, they should not be seen as faults. Rather they are celebrations of our imperfectly perfect world.
USE OF A MALA
As the thumb presses each bead against the finger the strand is placed upon, repeat the chosen mantra. When you come to the ‘guru bead’, or the tassel, twist the mala around and begin again in the opposite direction.
Effect of using a mala: It assists in repeating the mantra. In addition, the use of a mala stimulates the brain and the nervous system. This occurs through the reflex points activated as the beads are pressed by the fingertips.
CRYSTAL CARE – Cleansing, charging & programming
All crystals are energetically different but the principles are the same for all of them.
CLEANSING
Energies build up within the gem stones, even if they have been stationary. Cleansing releases this build-up, and restores their true vibrational frequency.
Crystals can be held under running water, or immersed in salt water (as long as they are not water soluble like Selenite, or sensitive structurally like Hematite). You can smudge them, pass them through the light from a candle, or expose them to certain crystals which have the ability to cleanse other ones, such as Carnelian. Some are self-cleansing, such as Citrine.
CHARGING
This is the energetic renewal stage. It is where you set your intentions and work in unison with the stone toward a common purpose. It aligns the gem stone’s metaphysical properties with your vibrations and frequencies.
The most convenient option is leaving the crystal in sunlight for 1-2 hours, or moonlight overnight (use another method if your crystal is photosensitive). Sound vibrations from singing bowls, gongs or simply your voice can also reset the energy of the crystal without making changes to it structurally – it simply returns to its vibrational state.
PROGRAMMING – optional
Let your higher guidance dedicate the crystal to the purpose for which you wish to use it.
Simply hold the stone in your hands in front of a light source, and say out loud: “I dedicate this crystal to the Highest of Good.” Then attune it: “I program this crystal for [your purpose].”
GENERAL TIPS FOR THE CARE OF A MALA
Malas need to be kept away from moisture, as some components can be sensitive to it. Certainly remove a mala before entering a shower.
They need to be removed when active. With yoga practice it is easy enough to slip the mala inside your top to avoid it getting snagged on anything. The same applied to sleeping – it is best to remove it altogether.
Malas are precious handmade treasures and deserve to have their own box or bag when not in use.
