Pashmina got its name from the Persian word “pashm” meaning “soft gold”. We know it well for its softness, lightness, warmth, elegance and timelessness. This type of wool is the most luxurious fibre. Pashmina is much softer than superfine Merino wool of the same diameter. Pashmina wool is also feather-like in lightness, and has a superb ability to absorb dyes and moisture. On an equal weight basis, Pashmina has three times more insulating capacity than wool.
These Pashmina shawls are made with the fine down fibres of the goat’s undercoat. This is why pashmina has to be hand-processed and woven into the end products. Therefore, the quality of the finished garment is dependent upon the skill level of the artisans. The expert craftsmanship and the rarity of the wool are the reasons for the relatively high cost. Hence these luxurious items are often acquired as gifts, or at least as treasured ‘forever’ items.
The incredible warmth factor stems from the super-low winter temperatures of the regions where these goats live. They are native to the mountainous northern India. Kundalini yogis and yoginis have traditionally favoured this ultra-fine material. The shawl's light weight makes it perfect for travel.
Despite the generous size (204cm x 78cm) they weigh in at only 80g.
